Philip Gostling leads and manages Oakfield Park Accountants. He has more than 30 years of experience in accountancy, corporate taxation, tax planning and business advice.
Having wanted to start his own practice since he was a teenager, Philip began his career at Coe & Midgley, a small local firm of chartered accountants in Skipton, North Yorkshire. There, he received traditional training in how to properly prepare a set of accounts and gained experience working with small and medium-sized companies. Although Philip did not intend to focus on preparing accounts throughout his career, he believed it was important to understand the process thoroughly before leading others within a professional practice.
After five years, Philip moved to Clough & Co in Bradford to work in its corporate tax department. He qualified through the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales in September 1994 and decided to specialise in taxation wherever possible, while developing his broader experience.
Philip later moved to Blackburn, Lancashire, to join Chambers Howard, where he progressed into senior management. After three years with the firm, he established his own practice, which he initially ran while continuing to work in Blackburn.
In September 1999, the practice opened its first office on Water Street in Skipton. It subsequently expanded through the acquisition of practices in West Lancashire and Cumbria. Over the following 20 years, the offices were consolidated as technology developed, while the client base continued to grow.
Philip has primarily worked with small and medium-sized companies, typically with annual turnovers of between ยฃ1 million and ยฃ20 million. He believes businesses of this size do not always receive the level of attention they require, despite having increasingly complex financial, taxation and commercial needs.
