Find a Self Assessment accountant for your tax return

If you are self-employed, a landlord, a company director or have income that is not taxed at source, you probably need to file a UK Self Assessment tax return. An accountant can do it for you, claim what you are owed and keep you clear of penalties.

Who needs to file a Self Assessment return?

  • Sole traders with trading income over £1,000
  • Partners in a business partnership
  • Landlords with rental income above the property allowance
  • Company directors in many cases, especially if they receive dividends
  • People with untaxed income, such as foreign income, large investment income or capital gains to report
  • People who need to pay the High Income Child Benefit Charge (unless they have opted to pay it through PAYE)

Key deadlines and penalties

  • 5 October: register for Self Assessment if you are filing for the first time
  • 31 October: paper return deadline
  • 31 January: online return deadline, and payment of the balance plus the first payment on account
  • 31 July: second payment on account
  • Missing the filing deadline brings an automatic £100 penalty, with more after three, six and twelve months, plus interest on late payments

Making Tax Digital for Income Tax

From April 2026, sole traders and landlords with qualifying income over £50,000 must keep digital records and send quarterly updates to HMRC using compatible software, with the threshold due to fall to £30,000 from April 2027 and £20,000 from April 2028. An accountant can choose and set up the software and handle the quarterly updates for you.

What a Self Assessment accountant does

  • Registers you with HMRC if needed
  • Prepares and files your return accurately and on time
  • Claims allowable expenses and reliefs, such as pension contributions and Gift Aid
  • Calculates payments on account, and applies to reduce them if your income has fallen
  • Deals with HMRC on your behalf if they have questions
  • Advises on whether a limited company would suit you better

How much does it cost?

Most accountants charge a fixed fee for a Self Assessment return, with the price depending on how many income sources you have, such as self-employment, property, dividends or foreign income. Many sole traders choose a package that includes bookkeeping and Making Tax Digital updates. Ask for a quote before the January rush, when some accountants stop taking new clients.

Common questions

No, you can file online yourself. An accountant is worth it if you have several income sources, rental property, foreign income, capital gains, or you are unsure what you can claim.
You get an automatic £100 penalty, even if you owe no tax, with daily penalties after three months and further penalties at six and twelve months. Interest is charged on tax paid late. File as soon as you can to limit the damage.
If your last tax bill was over £1,000 and less than 80% of your tax was collected at source, HMRC asks for two advance payments towards next year's bill, on 31 January and 31 July. You can apply to reduce them if you expect lower income.
Yes. Once you authorize them as your agent, your accountant can deal with HMRC on your behalf.
As early as possible after 5 April. Many accountants get very busy in December and January and may stop taking on new Self Assessment clients close to the deadline.
