Bookkeepers and bookkeeping services

Find a bookkeeper and get your books under control

Up-to-date books are the foundation of everything else: tax returns, cash flow, loans and peace of mind. A bookkeeper takes the receipts, invoices and bank feeds off your hands so you always know where you stand.

Get matched with a bookkeeper

What a bookkeeper does

  • Records income and expenses and categorizes transactions
  • Reconciles bank and credit card accounts every month
  • Sends invoices and chases late payments (accounts receivable)
  • Pays and tracks bills (accounts payable)
  • Runs payroll in many cases
  • Prepares monthly reports: profit and loss, balance sheet and cash flow
  • Gets everything ready for your accountant at year end
  • Catch-up and clean-up work when the books have fallen behind

Bookkeeper or accountant?

A bookkeeper records and organizes the day-to-day transactions. An accountant uses that information to prepare tax returns and financial statements, plan taxes and give advice. Most small businesses need a bookkeeper more often and an accountant less often. Many firms offer both. Read more in Bookkeeping vs accounting: the differences explained.

Online and cloud bookkeeping

Most bookkeepers now work in cloud software such as QuickBooks Online, Xero, FreshBooks or Sage, connected to your bank feeds. That means your bookkeeper can be anywhere in your country and you can see your numbers at any time. Choose a bookkeeper who is experienced in the software you use, or ask them to recommend one.

How much does a bookkeeper cost?

Bookkeepers usually charge a monthly fee based on the number of transactions and accounts, or an hourly rate. Catch-up and clean-up projects are often quoted separately. A bookkeeper generally costs less per hour than an accountant, and good books also reduce your accountant's bill at year end.

How to choose a bookkeeper

  1. Software skills

Ask which software they use every day and whether they hold certifications in it.

  2. Qualifications

In the USA, look for certified bookkeepers (AIPB or NACPB). In the UK, look for AAT or ICB membership. Every listing shows the professional body.

  3. Your industry

Retail, construction, e-commerce and hospitality all have specific needs, such as inventory or job costing.

  4. Clear scope

Agree in writing what is done each month, when reports arrive, and how you will share documents.

Common questions

It depends on your transaction volume, the number of accounts and whether payroll is included. Many offer tiered monthly packages. Ask for a quote based on your last few months of bank statements.
Software makes bookkeeping easier but does not do it for you. Transactions still need to be categorized, reconciled and checked. If you are falling behind, or your accountant spends hours fixing your books, a bookkeeper usually pays for themselves.
Some experienced bookkeepers prepare simple returns, but tax returns and tax advice are usually best left to an accountant, CPA or enrolled agent. Your bookkeeper prepares the records they need.
Catch-up bookkeeping brings books that have fallen behind up to date, often months or years of transactions, so you can file returns, apply for a loan or understand your business again.
Yes. With cloud software and bank feeds, many bookkeepers work fully online. You can find bookkeepers by country and service on My Accounting Hub.
