Contractor accountantsFind a contractor accountant who knows your rules
Contractors face rules that ordinary self-employed people do not, from IR35 in the UK to worker classification in the USA. A specialist contractor accountant helps you choose the right setup, stay compliant and keep more of your contract rate.
Get matched with a contractor accountantUK contractors: limited company, umbrella and IR35
Most UK contractors work either through their own limited company or through an umbrella company that employs them and runs payroll. A limited company can be more tax-efficient and gives you more control, but brings more admin: Corporation Tax, annual accounts, Confirmation Statements, payroll for yourself and dividend planning.
IR35 (the off-payroll working rules) decides whether you are taxed like an employee. Since April 2021, medium and large private sector clients, like public sector bodies, decide your status for each contract. For small clients, your own company still decides. Getting it wrong can mean back taxes and penalties. A contractor accountant can review contracts and working practices and help you plan for inside or outside IR35 roles.
US independent contractors and 1099 work
In the USA, independent contractors receive a 1099-NEC instead of a W-2 and pay their own income tax and self-employment tax, usually through quarterly estimated payments. The worker classification rules decide whether you are really a contractor or an employee, and they differ between the IRS, the Department of Labor and states such as California.
Higher-earning contractors often consider forming an LLC and electing S corp status, paying themselves a reasonable salary and taking the rest as distributions, which can reduce self-employment tax. An accountant can tell you when it makes sense.
What a contractor accountant does
- Sets up your limited company or LLC and registers it for the right taxes
- Runs payroll for you as a director or owner-employee
- Plans the best mix of salary and dividends or distributions
- Reviews contracts for IR35 or classification risk
- Prepares annual accounts and business and personal tax returns
- Handles VAT or sales tax registration and returns where needed
- Advises on expenses, pensions and retirement accounts
How much does a contractor accountant cost?
Contractor accountants usually charge a fixed monthly fee that covers company accounts, payroll, tax returns and unlimited questions. Some offer IR35 contract reviews as an add-on. Compare what is included rather than just the price, and check whether your personal tax return is part of the package.
